You are as much a part of the graduates journey as 13:40 And before I hand the microphone over first to our first student speaker, I'd like to 13:45 take a moment to address our graduating class. 13:48 Class of 2023, congratulations on completing your Menlo Park City School 13:53 District experience 13:54 and your middle school career. 13:57 Today marks an important milestone in your lives as you stand at the beginning of a new 14:02 all of us are so proud of all of you this year our 14:07 school's mission was to 14:09 create a middle school where all students families and staff feel valued 14:13 connected and inspired our mission serves as a reminder of the ideals we 14:19 hold dear the adults in your life your teachers your coaches and 14:24 your families 14:25 have all worked hard throughout these past middle school years and throughout 14:29 your career 14:30 in MPCSD to ensure that each of you has felt valued, 14:34 connected, and inspired in everything you do. 14:38 To ensure you know you are valued, we have learned your names, 14:43 your habits, your likes and dislikes, your strengths, 14:46 and your areas for growth. When I reflect on my experiences at Hillview, an 18:48 image 18:48 that comes to mind is a garden full of beautiful plants, both small and tall, 18:53 with many patterns and shapes. I see the plants and flowers of this garden as the 18:58 students here at Hillview. Let me explain. A garden requires water, 19:04 sunlight, and a 19:05 space to grow and thrive. Our water, which helps us go through the depths of 19:09 each subject, is our teachers. 19:11 Whether we're learning about the Earth's gravitational pull of the Sun, the early 19:16 presidents like George Washington, Andrew Jackson, and Thomas Jefferson, writing 19:21 our own suspense stories, or doing our Whopper project at the very last minute, 19:26 which I definitely didn't do. I'm sorry, Mr. D. The 19:31 teachers at Hillview have 19:32 helped us expand our minds and become curious about topics we've never known 19:35 about before. Next, we have sunlight. 19:39 The sunlight is the fun that we have, whether it's pieing your teacher in the face, 19:44 I see you, Mr. O 'Brien, playing music on Fridays, engaging 19:49 in interesting debates about our peers' opinions, 19:52 or personally, my favorite, the joke of the day, which obviously makes everyone laugh. 19:59 Lastly, a garden requires an open space for the plants to grow freely. 20:03 At Hillview, we have permission to make mistakes, and instead of being embarrassed by them, 20:07 we are taught to learn from our mistakes and use our errors to our advantage. 20:11 This helps us become the best version of ourselves. 20:15 In this space, we have been challenged and encouraged to think outside of what we're used to, 20:20 whether through school sports, playing a volleyball or basketball games against the teachers, 20:25 participating in a musical or production for the first time, 20:28 such as Matilda, Scipino, Sousical, and Arsenic and the Old Lace. 20:33 In addition, we all learn specific things. 20:35 Decades Dance in PE and we all learned about important battles such as the 20:39 Revolutionary War and the Civil War and we did it together in this garden and 20:44 I'm so proud that together we planted this garden and together we will believe 20:49 in tomorrow and together we will care for the future seeds to come. Esme Allen, Willow 24:39 Basta, Hayden 24:41 Bron Gersma, Eliza Crow, Mary Lane 24:46 Berry, Kyle 24:48 Kylie Lamb, Ford Long, Mackenzie Morales, 24:53 Leah Nadov, Nathan Sanaki, Lila Samichi, 24:59 Evan Smith, 25:01 Caleb Swartzberg, Kiefer Tudorberg, and Joseph Tompkins. 25:06 Congratulations. 25:13 All right, congratulations to all. 25:15 Honored guests, please welcome. 25:16 Welcome to the podium graduating 8th grader Elliot Choney 25:20 for his graduation address. 25:42 Hi, I'm Elliot Choney. 25:44 You probably know me as that curly -haired kid with the hard -to -pronounce last name, as any teacher who's ever had me can tell you, or 25:50 really anyone who's ever seen it. 25:51 Or that kid who spends way too much time doing broadcasting. 25:55 Well, those are all pretty accurate. 25:57 Today, I'm here as an eighth-grade student who is graduating this year. 26:00 And let's face it, these three years at Hillview have not been an average middle school experience. 26:05 We started off in COVID lockdown, a hybrid school day, and 12-person cohorts for a year. 26:10 Then, in seventh grade, we wore masks and... 26:12 did covid testing every week to be honest eighth grade was the only year that felt normal 26:17 i say 26:18 normal in quotes because this year has been the most chaotic year of my life it was 26:24 the most fun 26:24 the most dramatic the most emotional and the year with the most effort of my life i 26:29 found myself 26:30 doing things this year that the me of last year would have been terrified of but i did them and 26:34 i couldn't be happier that i did to be honest it's kind of intimidating being up here i'm 26:40 usually the 26:40 behind the camera backstage or in the broadcasting studio and wow this is very different today 26:46 i'm 26:47 on stage instead of working the camera and i know because of hillview we've all found ways to step 26:51 out of our comfort zones i know i myself have done that countless times while at hillview 26:56 i 26:56 have learned that success is not a destination but a journey we all stumble we 27:01 will all fall 27:02 but what matters most is how you pick yourself up and keep moving forward believe 27:07 in yourself 27:08 and trust in your abilities, 27:10 which even though it is tough, 27:11 I know we have all done this year. 27:14 You cannot have success without failure. 27:17 Even after an unconventional middle school experience, 27:20 it doesn't end here. 27:22 While many of us are moving forward to different high schools, 27:26 we're moving forward together 27:27 because graduation doesn't mean goodbye. 27:30 As you look back at your time here, 27:32 I hope you remember the friendships you made, 27:34 the memories you created, and the lessons you made. 27:36 learned. You have been challenged both academically and personally and you have 27:41 overcome those challenges. We've made it from sixth to eighth grade and it's all 27:46 led to this. As I finish the speech I would like to thank my mom for always 27:51 believing in me even when I didn't believe in myself. I would like to thank 27:56 all of my teachers for encouraging me to think about topics more deeply. I would 28:00 like to thank all of my friends for teaching me such valuable lessons along 28:04 I'd like to thank the Academy. Oh, wait, sorry. And if it was, no one would get anything done, but there was always something, something 28:29 fun that happened along the way. And honestly, those. 28:33 moments are all I can remember now. I 28:59 am Jonna Becker. 29:01 I'm one of the Hillview's assistant principals, 29:03 and I'm pleased to be here this evening. 29:05 Before we continue the awards, 29:07 I want to recognize that this eighth grade class 29:10 holds a special place in my heart, 29:12 as they are the last class where many students 29:15 also know me as their former fifth grade teacher. 29:19 These students were in fifth grade 29:22 when schools closed for the pandemic. 29:27 You guys didn't think I could. 29:29 cry huh we navigated how to do school together on 29:34 zoom and really not knowing 29:36 when or if we would ever be together back in person I'm especially glad 29:41 that 29:42 we're here for an in -person graduation because their fifth grade promotion was 29:47 done in a drive -through in cars now if you grew up in the Bay Area 29:52 in the same 29:53 era that I did you know exactly 29:57 where you were the minute the big 89 earthquake rocked our lives. Similarly 30:03 these students will 30:05 always stand out as my class when the pandemic began in 2020. I 30:11 feel truly blessed that I was 30:13 able to move to Hillview with them and watch them grow over the last three years. So 30:18 now let's 30:19 continue the recognition of our departmental award winners from World Languages. And now the rest of the student body and 34:19 I will stand up here on 34:21 the stage as proud representatives of our eighth grade class ready to tackle our next 34:26 challenge. 34:27 If you would have told me three years ago that Hillview would have been able to mold me into 34:32 the 34:32 strong and proud eighth grader I am today, I would have thought you were joking but Hillview 34:38 opened so many new doors and opportunities for me and the rest of the 34:42 eighth grade without us even realizing it until now. From the extensive creative 34:47 programs such as woods and photography to the many different types of math, 34:51 Hillview leaves no stone unturned. Oh and I almost forgot to mention the people 34:56 that make this whole school function, the teachers and staff. Every day the 35:00 educators and administrators here at Hillview come to school with smiles on 35:06 hopeful mindsets from the faces of relief that teachers make when the last 35:10 student turns in their benchmark essay or the way all teachers try to make the 35:14 whole class laugh with the increasingly unique joke of the day even the looks of 35:18 enjoyment the PE teachers have after making us run the mile the Hillview 35:22 teachers always enhance the sense of community compassion and kindness but 35:27 today we're here to celebrate the Hillview eighth graders be a countless 35:31 hours of homework with a just mercy reading or just 35:34 we lost studying and tests for many different kinds of math, not to mention 35:38 that each and every one of the outstanding eighth graders here today 35:41 have persevered through online learning, hybrid learning, and mass learning. 35:46 Basically, we were all able to continue school despite the fact that we were 35:50 living in a global pandemic. We all came out of COVID stronger and ready to grasp 35:55 our new opportunities, and that's exactly what we did. From school to sports to 35:59 making new friends, we've all bounced back together. 36:02 So now we stand here today as a community of students, parents, 36:07 teachers, relatives, and staff. 36:10 Together, we will all take this tremendous leap to high school. 36:14 We can't know what will happen or who we might meet, but in our last few minutes as 36:19 members of the Hillview 8th grade, 36:21 let's all take a moment to appreciate our fellow classmates, counselors, teachers, and administrators 36:27 that have worked so hard to get us here today. 36:30 Congratulations to the class of 2023. 36:33 We made it! 36:45 Thank you, Skylar. 36:47 My name is Tisha Whiteley, 36:49 and I am the instructional coach at Hillview. 36:51 And I am especially honored to be here this evening 36:54 because similarly to assistant principal, 36:57 John... 36:58 Becker. Our 39:25 next awards are for Block H. Block H is a recognition program that 39:29 rewards Hillview students for their various contributions to the school and 39:33 community. While Block H is a coveted award, the true benefit of participating 39:38 in the program is the development of crucial skills that create a well-rounded, 39:43 civic-minded, and accomplished student. 39:46 Students submitted evidence for their participation in school leadership, spirit events, 39:52 performing arts, athletics, music, and for recognition, such as Hawk Harrahs or 39:57 Student of the Month. 39:58 To earn the Physical Block H Award, students needed to earn a total of 115 40:03 points. 40:04 We are so proud of this year's Block H winners. 40:08 Congratulations to Calvin Blanford, Mia Bowers, Martin 40:13 Chung. 40:14 Evan Chopra, Eliza Crow, Henry Lucianovich, Maddy 40:20 Masso, Leah Nadov, Lynn Nguyen, Elise 40:25 Rakoff, 40:26 Coral Stone, Elit Choney, Kaya Wasserstein, and Juliet West. 40:31 Let's give them a round of applause. 40:39 Thank you. Jeff was a spunky, fun -loving, quirky kid, and 43:36 a joy to have in class, as tells 43:39 his teacher, Mrs. Debbie DeVoto. In the summer before his seventh 43:44 grade year, Jeff was diagnosed 43:46 with cancer, and he passed away shortly after Christmas that year. The following 43:51 June, the 43:52 Sorrells family graciously set up the Sorrells Scholarship Award in his honor, and for 43:57 35 years 43:59 one eighth grader what is now a scholarship check to be presented upon 44:04 graduation from high school. Dr. and Mrs. Sorrells could not be here tonight but 44:10 their son Kevin is. Kevin please stand and accept our deepest gratitude for 44:15 the 44:16 incredible gift you and your family has given the Hillview community over all 44:20 these years. 44:27 The selection and announcement of this award has always been such a highlight for 44:32 our staff and school community. 44:34 I'd also like to thank the Hillview staff, past and present, who each year brainstormed 44:40 the names of a plethora of deserving candidates and worked to narrow the field. 44:45 It has always been a true labor of love. 44:49 A couple of years ago, the Sorrells family sent us a letter, and in it they described the 44:54 ideal recipient. 44:55 I'd like to read from that letter now. 44:59 The giving of this award has blessed us more than words can express. 45:03 We knew that we didn't want to recognize only academic achievement or easily measurable 45:08 qualities, but rather what is today considered character. 45:13 Some would say these are the fruits of the spirit, peace, patience, kindness, 45:19 gentleness, 45:20 self-control, and the giving of oneself to others. 45:23 without any expectation of an external reward. 45:26 The gift of perseverance and a zest and joy of living. 45:32 35 years is a long time and the Sorrells family 45:35 recently let us know that the time has come to step away. 45:38 And so the decision has been made 45:40 to continue the scholarship tradition 45:42 based on these same qualities of character 45:44 with an emphasis on perseverance, overcoming obstacles, 45:48 and the giving of oneself to others 45:50 without any expectation. 45:51 of an external reward. 45:53 It is my pleasure to announce that Debbie DeVoto, 45:56 a longtime Hillview counselor 45:58 and the fifth and sixth grade teacher of Jeff Sorrells, 46:01 will carry on this tradition with the new name, 46:04 the Sorrells Character Award. 46:06 Debbie isn't able to be here tonight, 46:08 but she hopes to continue attending our graduations 46:11 in the future. 46:12 As always, our Sorrells Award winner 46:15 from the Hillview class of 2019, Victoria Pedraza. 46:19 is here this evening to give this year's graduating class 46:25 some words of wisdom 46:26 and accept her reward. 46:36 Okay flashbacks um hello good evening everyone 46:41 my name is Victoria and I 46:43 graduated here in 2019 and I this morning I just graduated high school 46:52 I couldn't believe it, but I did it. 46:56 I am very delighted to be here today because I had so many wonderful memories here 47:01 because 47:04 they were some of the most impactful school years of my life. 47:09 You know, my friends, of course, I know people say once you get to high school, your friend 47:14 and girls split up, and . . . 47:16 Not gonna lie, that's true, but you make better, 47:20 you make new friendships, and I love them. 47:24 And, but obviously, obviously, true friendships last. 47:29 I'm still very close to my middle school friends, 47:31 which, super happy. 47:37 Anywho, also a big thank you to my eighth grade teachers. 47:40 It was good to see Ms. Wynn here, and I saw 47:44 you miss staff ain't gonna forget you and miss Ellis who I have not seen but I 47:48 will find you so they 47:55 will always have a special place in my heart because they 47:58 pushed me and encouraged me to do a speech in my eighth grade graduation and 48:04 super scary but I didn't know I was gonna do that but I did it they 48:13 oh sorry sorry guys but 48:20 after that I felt amazing super good because I faced 48:24 my one of my worst fears because I never saw myself speaking in front of 48:29 a huge 48:30 crowd so you know I I went 48:35 into my freshman year as a different person a 48:38 better version of myself 48:40 so I really did enjoy my high school years so 48:46 I just wanted to tell the 20 48:48 2023 class to try their best to complete any goals they want because 48:53 it 48:54 is possible like I didn't believe that at first but it's true you can do 48:58 anything you want if you really believe in yourself but most importantly do not 49:03 procrastinate like I am a procrastinating 49:08 I do that 24 -7 and it just it was a struggle at the 49:13 end of the year but you 49:14 know I still did it yeah thank you everyone and 49:20 I 49:29 will present Victoria 49:30 with tonight's scholarship 49:37 And now, for 49:45 this year's Sorrel Character Award winner, this student comes to school 49:50 full of pep and positive energy, ready to bring a smile to everyone's 49:56 face. 49:57 He is a good friend, a good brother, and a dedicated student. 50:02 He tries harder than anyone would ever do. 50:04 ever expect. The reason is the 1:25:45 word choices can be a very powerful reminder, especially when 1:25:50 things feel 1:25:51 challenging. While you do not have a choice of your family, or 1:25:56 your siblings 1:25:57 for that matter, or even the circumstances for which you were born 1:26:01 into, life, and in fact most situations. 1:26:06 situations present many, many choices, and realizing and 1:26:11 finding the choice in all that 1:26:14 you do can be the difference that unlocks your mind to possibility, 1:26:20 hope, and opportunity. 1:26:22 Compassion is a choice. 1:26:25 Hillview grads, the balloon in the air is spectacular, but 1:26:31 this is important. 1:26:35 Compassion is a choice. 1:26:37 Attitude is a choice. 1:26:40 Integrity is a choice. 1:26:44 Expressing gratitude is a choice. 1:26:47 Being open to another's perspective is a choice. 1:26:52 Going the extra mile is a choice. 1:26:54 The pep talk you give yourself is a choice. 1:26:58 Being determined is a choice, and take it from me, do not... 1:27:02 wait for motivation do not wait for motivation to come around instead 1:27:07 choose to be disciplined 1:27:09 and persevere towards your goals you have choices and when life is hard and 1:27:14 throws you another 1:27:15 curveball as you've already been thrown many times do all you can to find 1:27:20 the choice 1:27:22 and when you discover the choice in the situation you will find control which 1:27:28 may be the one very 1:27:29 thing 1:27:30 allows you to move forward, to ask for help, and to accomplish 1:27:35 your goals. From 7 to 9 30 the grad 1:29:21 night festivity 1:29:22 will take place in the gym. Families, if you wish to view the magically transformed 1:29:28 gym, 1:29:29 guided tours from our front gym entrance will begin soon. Students, 1:29:34 your entrance is around 1:29:37 the lunch shelter. All parents, except for volunteers, must be out in time 1:29:42 for the student 1:29:43 fun to begin.
