many dance production courses, and how the amazing Fred Matthews emphasized

the dance is right before your intermission, because you want it to be a dance that is

different, that is unique, and that is special, and I knew this year

exactly which dance to

put there, because we had the amazing opportunity to work with Miss Farah, and she came

work with all of your students and created an amazing piece, so I'm going to turn it

gentle authority with these students I mean there's over a hundred kids

see her command their attention without losing her voice is really something

Gathak is classical dance of South Asia, India, Pakistan.

I've been doing this work for about 30 years, and I love coming into schools

because, though I've been doing it for as long as...

I have, the way I was introduced to it, yes, it happens to be of my

cultural heritage,

but it's not just a dance form.

It's one that's rooted in history, in culture, in etiquette.

And so creating that context and environment for students is something I feel very

and responsible to and for.

And so Ms. DeAnda welcoming me in was, yes, an opportunity

some choreography, but also to hopefully give them a window

into essentially cultural exchange and sensitivity

So the piece that I chose to create really with them

is meant to demonstrate some of the fundamental techniques.

Katak is a storytelling.

art form, but it's also rooted in a lot of technique, of footwork, of, in this particular

classical form of South Asia, more subtle expression, use of hands, neck,

as you'll

see, and a little bit of storytelling. You'll see they invoke some elements of nature. I

also think it's very poignant that today happens to be International Women's Day because

this particular piece I have

happened to set to some music by a dear friend of mine,

called Women of the World.
