Hello, my name is Aviva Hornstein and my speech is called Valued, Connected,

We have a saying here that represents many important aspects of being a Hillview student.

We want everyone here, everyone, to feel valued, connected.

and inspired. The phrase is often overlooked when it is said on Hawk Talk

each morning but it sums up many experiences that show the true spirit of

us as Hawks. We put value into each other, we feel connected with

other people

through activities, and we are inspired by our amazing teachers who have helped

us along this journey. Students feel valued because Hillview builds a

community based on the firm belief that all students matter, that no

is left behind. Students have the space to pursue passions with others such

as

art, music, literature, science, and more. Being able to connect with

others through

common interest builds value and self-worth. Reflecting on the idea that

our school is a place for all people and that all people belong. Our

wide variety of clubs that show the diversity of students at Hillview such

as sports. I decided to try track and fields for sports at Hillview this year.

I was a little bit worried about not being good enough and that people might

make fun of me if I wasn't fast enough. I could not have-

been more wrong. Track and field has further solidified my

belief that our

student body sticks together. I've witnessed so many students cheer each

other on, whether it was during PE class, a presentation, or even an after-school

activity. Hillview's community of students helps each other stay connected

by supporting one another when it can be difficult. Support is one of the

greatest ways to build connection and community.

and I'm honored to be one of our class speakers.

We did it.

We made it through middle school.

Three years of navigating seven classes a day,

tests we forgot to study for,

making new friends, cementing old bonds,

and steadily evolving into who we are today.

Look at us now, dressed all fancy

and trying not to trip on our way to the stage.

If you told sixth grade me

that I'd be giving a graduation speech one day,

I probably would have laughed,

proceeded to choke on my Z-bar,

and thought you were out of your-

mind. Yet, here I am, and I still love Z

-bars. Honestly, back then, I would have never considered

the idea of public speaking and representing our class today. However, over these

past three years,

I've realized that this is the exact right time to test the waters, to try out new

things.

It's all right if I mess up or stutter a bit. I can learn from my mistakes and try again.

At least, I'll have known that I've tried, that I've grown from these chances taken,

and for me, that's so much better than wondering, what if?

Personally, I've ventured outside of my comfort zone by playing new sports, which has been

a humbling experience to say the least, continued to challenge myself in class most

of the time,

joined our student body leadership team, even dipped a toe into drama.

Literally one toe.

like the smallest role ever.

But hey, I was there, I wore the costume,

I nailed it, probably.

Middle school has been a journey.

A journey full of questionable fashion choices,

voice cracks, me included,

and group projects where one person did everything.

but it has also been full of great memories and experiences.

We have learned not just in the classroom,

I want to take a minute and recognize that

each class here at Hillview leaves behind a

legacy. And as a staff, we often talk about what we will remember most about each class

of students that passes through Hillview. For me, this class legacy is

one that is rooted

in our ASB. The Associated Student Body, or our student leaders, was our largest

ASB group

to date. With 35 members, we were able to provide a

voice to so many of our student

leaders on campus. I'm the

assistant principal who gets to work with the ASB

and really my job is the easiest because

I stand on the sideline and I cheer them on while they make decisions about the different

events and different leadership opportunities that happen here on campus.

This year I was continuously impressed with ASB's enthusiasm for school spirit and their

unwavering commitment to looking at Hillview from the perspective of all students.

They partnered with

in taking the first steps

in becoming a no place for hate school.

They led more community events

than we have ever hosted in past years.

and it has continued to guide me through my time here my name is Jack and I'm here today

to share my experiences about the power and determination that these hawks have shown here

at Hillview we're told that in order to make big changes you need to be an adult that

kids are too

young to do anything

powerless. But the class of 2025 has proven that wrong. We've proved that there's

no such

thing as being too young, no such thing as being too powerless. I've learned that knowledge

is power. Knowing how to achieve your goals can get you anywhere you desire. It only takes

time and dedication. At Hillview, if you want to start a club, there's a way. If

to organize an event, there's a way. If you want to do anything, at Hillview, there's

always a way.

We have so many resources at our disposal.

Our school provides so much support.

And yet, at the same time, we have the freedom.

Freedom to make our own marks, to pave our own paths.

Here, we don't let the expectations define us.

One of the main reasons I've been able to learn this

is through the many people I've met.

met here at Hillview. People like teachers, counselors, aides, custodial staff,

administration,

and so many more. These people have shown me things I thought to be impossible and how we can

make anything happen. We have staff members who are always here for us, here to support us for

every little step along the way. They've been here to help us in our academic journey, whether

that's to help us with our homework or practicing our presentations, but also emotionally. They're

there to comfort us when we're feeling down.

us when we're happy they're to guide us when we're lost and confused but

ultimately some of the best people we can count on are each other being there

for one another is ultimately the only way we survive and we do over the years

our class has grown in so many different ways but we've grown together we've

formed bonds with each other that never would have been possible without an
1:00:42
amazing place like Coview together we can do anything we set our minds to some
1:00:47
adults out there call this stubbornness but in my
1:00:50
it's our resilience, our determination. Just like a hawk, we're quick and agile.

We get things done and we pivot when we need to. During my years here, I've seen

our service team collect books for the incarcerated, seen our ASB make Hillview
1:01:03
a no place for hate school, seen our student body raise money for cancer
1:01:07
awareness. The class of 25 is stronger together than we
1:01:12
are alone. We are
1:01:13
gathered here tonight to celebrate what we've done, but at the same time honor
1:01:17
what we'll become.

I know that after tonight, we'll no longer be Hillview Hawks, but as we move on to high

school, college, and beyond, I know that we won't stop dreaming big.

We won't stop short of our goals.

We'll continue to empower ourselves, continue to face challenges, and we will continue to overcome them.

And finally, we have one more award to present,

The final award is the Sorrells Character Award.

Jeff Sorrells was a student at Hillview back in the mid-1980s
1:02:02
when our school served students in grades 5 through 8.
1:02:06
Jeff was a spunky, fun-loving, quirky kid
1:02:09
and was a joy to have in class.
1:02:11
In the summer before his 7th grade year,
1:02:14
Jeff was diagnosed with cancer, and he passed away shortly after Christmas of that year.
1:02:19
The following June, the Sorrells family graciously set up the Sorrells Scholarship Award in
1:02:25
his honor and
1:02:26
for 37 years has awarded one eighth grader a scholarship check to be presented
1:02:32
upon graduation of high school.
1:02:34
The Sorrells family could not be here tonight, but we wish to extend our deepest gratitude for
1:02:39
the incredible gift their family has given the Hill
1:02:42
community over all these years. I'd also like to thank the Hillview staff, past
1:02:47
and present, who each June brainstormed the names of deserving candidates and
1:02:52
worked to narrow the field. It has always been a true labor of love. A
1:02:58

years ago the Sorrells family sent us a letter and in it they described the
1:03:03
ideal recipient. The letter said, the giving of this award has blessed us

more

than we can express.

we didn't want to recognize only academic achievement or easily measurable qualities,

but rather what is today considered character. Some would say these are the fruits of the spirit.

Peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self -control, and

the giving of oneself to others without any

expectation of an external reward. The gift of perseverance and a zest and

joy for living.

While the Sorrells family

recently let us know that the time has come to step away from this award, Debbie Devoto,

a longtime Hillview counselor who was one of Jeff's teachers, will carry on this

on these same qualities of character with an emphasis on perseverance, overcoming obstacles,

Clubs are one of the best ways to find yourself, a community, that you can

There are some great culture clubs in high school, and you shouldn't be afraid or hesitant to join one.

They can be super fun.

Some of you may already be worried about college.

Four years passes by really quickly, so make sure you stay on top of whatever goals you have for the future,

whether that's making yourself a competitive applicant for a competitive school.

applying for scholarships, figuring out trade schools, training your body for

athletics or the military, or even getting experience for future jobs. People

want to see that you're a productive member of society, so volunteering is

important, especially for college apps. Dedicate time to your community, yourself,

and make sure you love as fully as you can. You have four years of high school
