The One Act Play That Went Wrong November 9, 2023 - 8pm
Transcript
0:00
Welcome. Welcome to our Hillview PAC.
0:07
I want to say a special welcome to Miss Mendoza, who's here.
0:12
She was our paraeducator slash assistant
0:18
director for the spaces
0:20
because there were nine casts happening, so we
0:25
needed extra help.
0:28
So the production tonight, actually, though, isn't a Hillview production exactly.
0:35
It's the Cornell Polytechnic Drum Society that came
0:40
over in.
0:41
They've rented the PAC, and they've just done a wonderful job.
0:44
We've helped them out a little bit, but their director actually is going to come and talk to you,
0:49
and it's been wonderful.
0:50
They have lots of casts, and we're really proud of the work that they've
0:56
done here.
0:56
So I'm just going to hand it off to them and remind you, no flash photography and no
1:01
food or drink.
1:03
And you can have it, but please don't eat it or unpackage it during the show.
1:09
So thank you.
1:10
Thank you for being here.
1:12
I hope you enjoy the show.
1:13
And I'm going to hand it off to their technical director, Trevor, and he's going to take
1:19
over from here.
1:30
good evening ladies and gentlemen a couple of announcements number one turn off your phones
1:35
secondly if anyone finds a Lady Gaga CD box in the auditorium I need that back
1:40
please hand it
1:41
to me at the end of the performance enjoy the show clear cut the work lights
1:56
leave it just leave it but the mantelpiece we need time for the mantelpiece
2:08
good evening ladies and gentlemen
2:10
just write them on your hand and
2:15
don't spell them incorrectly
2:20
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the Cornell Polytechnic
2:27
Drama Society's full production of The Murder at Havisham
2:32
Manor.
2:33
I would like to personally welcome you to what will be my directorial debut and
2:38
my first production as head of the Drama Society.
2:41
We are particularly excited to present this play because for the first time in
2:46
the society's history, we have managed...
2:48
to find a play that can fit the company's numbers perfectly if we're honest
2:54
a lack of numbers has
2:56
hampered past productions last year's checkoff play two
3:01
sisters all last christmases the lion
3:05
in the wardrobe and of course our summer musical cat it
3:11
may interest you to know that this will be
3:13
the first time the society has been able to stage a
3:17
play of this scale. There's no question we usually have to contend with
3:22
a small budget,
3:23
such as in last year's presentation of Roald Dahl's James and the Peach.
3:31
Of course, during
3:33
the run of that particular show, the Peach spoilt, and we were forced
3:38
to present a hastily
3:39
devised alternative entitled, James, where's your peach?
3:47
finally we've been able to stage a play as it should be in which may I
3:52
say has been
3:53
exceptionally well cast I'm sure no one will forget the problems we faced
3:58
with casting before
3:59
such as in our Christmas presentation of Snow White in the tall
4:05
broad gentleman or indeed a
4:09
previous yes pantomime another Disney classic
4:13
ugly and the beast but now on
4:18
with the main event which I am confident will be
4:21
our best show yet so without further ado please put your hands together
4:26
for
4:27
Susie H .K. Brideswell's thrilling whodunit the murder at
4:32
Havishamana
4:57
Charlie are you ready we're waiting downstairs to raise a glass for your engagement Charlie
5:04
come
5:04
along now Charlie you've been in it for hours now if I didn't know better I'd say you were having
5:09
second thoughts about the wedding. Ha ha hang it all Charles if you won't come out I'll
5:14
come in.
5:15
Darn it he's locked the door. Hand me those keys Perkins. Here they are Mr Collymore. Thank
5:20
you
5:21
Perkins. We're coming in Charlie we're coming in. There we are. We're
5:27
in. But what's this
5:31
Charles unconscious? Asleep surely Mr Collymore. Darn it Perkins I hope so.
5:36
I'll take his post.
5:37
Blast! I knew something was off.
5:39
It's someone like Charles to disappear like this.
5:42
Sir, he's dead.
5:48
Darn it, Perkins, he can't be. He's my closest friend.
5:51
He's not breathing, sir, and there's no ink of heartbeat.
5:54
I'm dumbfounded. He was right as rain an hour ago.
5:57
I don't understand. He can't be dead. He was as fit as a fiddle.
6:01
It doesn't make any sense.
6:03
Of course it makes sense.
6:05
He's been...murdered!
6:13
Good God, where's Florence?
6:15
In the dining room, sir. Shall I fetch her?
6:17
Not yet. The last thing we need is for her to have another of her hysterical episodes.
6:22
Yes, sir. And do you think it was murder, Mr. Collymore? Or perhaps suicide?
6:27
Suicide? Charlie? Not possible. There was never a man with more zest for life than Charles.
6:32
He was young...
6:33
rich and soon to be married why on earth would he commit suicide but why on earth
6:38
would anyone
6:39
murder him sir oh he was such a good man charming kind a true
6:44
philanthropist he never had an enemy
6:48
in his life until today it seems hang it all Perkins Charles Havisham was murdered
6:53
in cold
6:54
blood in this very room on this very day in this very room
7:04
Shall I telephone the police, Mr. Collinwell?
7:06
The police?
7:07
They wouldn't make it out of here for days in this snowstorm.
7:12
I'll telephone Inspector Carter.
7:14
He lives just around the village.
7:16
He'll be here in next to no time.
7:17
Hand me the receiver, Peckins.
7:21
Thank you, Peckins.
7:23
Good evening.
7:24
Give me Inspector Carter.
7:25
I know it's late.
7:26
Sir, I don't care about the weather.
7:28
There's been a murder.
7:29
He's murdered Charles Havisham.
7:36
That's right, thank you.
7:37
He's on his way.
7:38
Inspector Carter.
7:39
They say he's the best darn inspector in the district.
7:42
He'll crack this case, and quick.
7:44
Very good, sir. And what shall I do?
7:46
Lock every doorman.
7:47
Not a soul gets out of Havisham Manor until the killer is found.
7:50
At once, sir.
7:52
And assemble everyone in here.
7:54
Good God!
7:55
Just an hour into the engagement party...
7:57
has already been a murder.
8:00
Florence!
8:02
Charlie!
8:03
Get out, Florence, you cannot be in here.
8:06
No, I can't believe what I am seeing.
8:09
My god, he looks so frail lying there.
8:11
I'm sorry, Florence, it's a shock to us all.
8:14
His skin is cold to the touch.
8:16
No, don't touch him, Florence.
8:18
I must.
8:19
You mustn't.
8:20
Unhand me.
8:21
Oh, Charles, one last embrace.
8:24
I cannot bear seeing my-
8:25
sister in such grief. Who could do such a thing the night of our engagement party?
8:30
Cecil quick your brother's dead. This way Master Havisham. I'm coming Miss Collymore.
8:36
Brother? Dead? It can't be. Calm yourself Cecil. Pour my stiff drink Pagans. Yes
8:41
sir.
8:43
Oh my god! He's drugged the whole bottle sir. There's not a drop
8:48
left.
9:03
There's not a job left!
9:04
Hang it off. There's another on the shelf.
9:07
Ah, yes. This one's...
9:14
It's horrifying. I mean, who on earth would have a motivation to murder Charles Havishab?
9:20
I can't...
9:36
It's unthinkable, right here in his own private rooms that have a shamana.
9:40
Thank you Perkins.
9:41
It's terrible, just a week after our engagement.
9:44
He was a good brother.
9:48
That's the best whiz game ever.
9:53
tasted have another to calm your nerves thank you Perkins make it
9:58
a double oh my
10:00
Charles my Charles my head is spinning I'm gonna become hysterical calm down
10:05
Florence another whiskey sir yes I
10:10
can't believe Charles sat up here alone
10:12
drinking when he was supposed to be downstairs with us my brother wasn't as
10:16
happy as he led people to
10:18
believe. Under that cheerful mask lay a darker side to a man many didn't know
10:21
about. It's true. He smiled often just for God.
10:27
I was lucky enough to be one of the
10:29
only people he truly confided in. I've lost a real friend today. We
10:34
all have
10:34
Perkins. Hang it. I knew Charles ever since school. I don't know how I'll ever
10:39
recover from this. You'll move back home with me. I'm your brother and I'll have
10:43
it no other way. Perkins is right. My brother was having a deep
10:46
Sense of melancholy and resentment. There's no doubt in my mind. It was suicide
10:51
Suicide Cecil, how can you say that? Of course not. It was murder murder in the first degree
10:55
Nonsense the man was paranoid jealous, and I can prove it. Perkins hand me his journal from the mantle piece
11:14
look at the last entry. I fear Florence does not love me, the night of our
11:18
engagement party. Despair engulfs my soul. But I love Charles with all my heart. As
11:23
I
11:23
said, driven mad with paranoia and jealousy.
11:33
The Inspector! Thank heavens he's here. What a terrible snowstorm.
11:39
Good evening, I'm
11:41
Inspector Cotta.
11:42
Uh, take my case.
11:44
Yes, like that.
11:49
This must be Charles Havisham.
11:52
I'm sorry, this must have given you all a terrible shock.
11:55
It did. We're all still reeling.
11:58
Naturally.
11:59
Are any of you the deceased's immediate family?
12:02
I'm Cecil Havisham. I'm his brother.
12:04
I'm Florence Collymore. I'm his fiancée.
12:07
Tonight was the night of our engagement party.
12:10
What a sad, sad thing.
12:13
You!
12:14
Have you poured everyone a stiff drink?
12:16
Yes, Inspector.
12:27
Let us raise a glass to a man we all loved.
12:30
To Charles.
12:31
Charles!
12:33
Delicious!
12:34
Excellent!
12:36
Listen, you all must be...
12:38
distraught. But forgive me, the sooner I can begin my inquiries the sooner we can
12:42
get to the bottom of this ghastly business. If
12:50
you be so kind as to bring
12:52
the body downstairs so I can examine it. Yes Inspector. I'll lend you a hand Perkins.
12:56
Then log on the doors to the house and prepare this room. I'll conduct my
13:00
inquiries in here afterwards. Inspector. Any ideas on the cause of death
13:06
be a number of things. Suffocation, strangulation, poison.
13:12
Before fully
13:13
examining the body, I wouldn't like to say...
13:36
How could someone do it?
13:38
Try not to think about it, Miss Collymore.
13:40
Once I've finished downstairs,
13:42
then I'll speak to you each individually,
13:44
and then perhaps you can get some space to calm your nerves.
13:47
Thank you, Inspector. This is all more than I can bear.
13:50
I'll be back presently as soon as I've finished examining the body.
14:02
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
14:33
Thank God they've all gone.
14:35
Don't say a word.
14:36
If they find out about us, we'll be suspects.
14:38
You and I were having an affair.
14:40
What of it?
14:40
It doesn't mean we killed him.
14:42
Of course not, but that's what the inspector will think.
14:44
It's fine.
14:45
We'll just carry on as if everything was just as it was.
14:53
Except now you won't be forced to marry my beastly brother.
14:56
And soon we can be together and not kill.
14:58
secrets. But please, while we're here, just the two of us, let me steal one quick
15:02
embrace. Oh Cecil, we can't if we're caught to do the end. Oh Florence, the
15:07
inspector
15:08
requires a pencil. What on earth is going on here? Sorry, I felt flustered. Cecil's
15:13
just cooling my brow. Just cooling her brow. I don't see how my sister's brow
15:18
is
15:18
any of your business, Havisham. Don't be a prig, Tom. Cecil's just trying to help.
15:23
Yes, Tom. Very well, if you'll excuse me.
15:29
I have the pencil.
15:37
Thank God he's gone. That man's such a nuisance.
15:40
He's my brother.
15:41
Oh, Florence, let me look at you just once.
15:43
Oh, Cecil.
15:44
Sorry to disturb you, Mr. Colmore, Miss Eversham.
15:49
I've just come to collect the keys to lock us all inside.
15:52
They're by the telephone, Perkins.
16:04
I shall lock the doors at once.
16:15
You don't think Perkins suspects us, do you?
16:17
Battled for?
16:18
Of course not.
16:19
Oh Cecil, love makes me forget myself.
16:23
I forgot the inspector's notebook. What in God's name?
16:26
I was about to finish Cecil Cotney.
16:28
You know, Cecil, I don't appreciate you trying to get your hands on my sister the
16:33
night of her fiancé's death.
16:35
You ought to take better care of her then, Collymore.
16:37
I'm overcome.
16:39
I haven't got time for this.
16:43
I have the inspector's notebook. I'll be on my way.
16:53
Blasted interruptions.
16:54
Kiss me, Cecil.
16:55
Oh, Florence, you make my heart beat out of my chest.
16:58
Your eyes send me into a dream.
17:00
Oh, Cecil.
17:02
Your eyes send me into a dream.
17:05
Oh, Cecil.
17:07
Oh, Cecil!
17:11
Sorry to disturb you again, Mr. Hampshire, Miss Collymore.
17:15
I've just come to prepare the room.
17:17
Thank you, Perkins. Put them on the mantel.
17:39
At last we're alone oh
17:45
Cecil let's run away from here
17:48
Soon, my love. But we must be careful. We mustn't arise suspicion.
17:52
Cecil, tell me, who do you think killed Charles?
17:55
There's no question in my mind, Florence. He was killed by your brother, Thomas Collymore.
18:00
My brother, what a devil of a situation this is!
18:04
Not so fast, Inspector!
18:22
But why would Thomas want Charles dead?
18:24
Isn't it obvious he was always bitter and possessive when it came to you?
18:28
He didn't like the idea of his best friend marrying his sister.
18:31
He saw you together at tonight's engagement party,
18:34
and it drove him half mad, and he snapped and killed Charles.
18:37
But if it is Thomas, what if he finds out about you and I?
18:40
I don't think there's any doubt he would kill us, just like he killed...
18:43
Charles. Oh, I feel faint again. Don't worry, Florence. Follow my lead. I'm
18:49
sorry to have kept
18:49
you, but now that I've inspected the body more closely, our interview can proceed.
18:56
Perkins,
18:56
bring in Charles' personal effects. Where would you lock them, Inspector? Set
19:02
them down on the
19:02
mantelpiece. As you wish, Inspector.
19:13
Don't go, Perkins. I'd like to ask you a few questions first.
19:19
Mr. Havsham, Miss
19:20
Corley Moore, perhaps you'd be as kind as to give us a moment's privacy, naturally.
19:28
Well, don't just stand there, Perkins. Take a seat. I
19:35
don't smoke, but you go ahead.
19:49
How are you feeling, Perkins?
19:52
A little shaken, sir, but I'll be fine.
19:54
You were close with Charles Havisham?
19:56
Yes, sir, very close.
19:59
Well, you don't appear very upset by his death.
20:02
On the canterie, I'm barely taking it in.
20:06
Oh, he was...
20:07
He's such a good man. Charming.
20:09
It's true.
20:11
You met him?
20:12
Once, briefly, at the Logue police station, he came in...
20:15
Evening, Inspector!
20:19
Once, briefly, at the Logue police station...
20:22
Of course they didn't notice me!
20:27
Police station, he came in as a consult...
20:29
I had lived!
20:32
He came in as a consultant on a fraud case I was working...
20:35
on. I see. How long have you been working here at Havisham Manor?
20:41
Eighty years. Eighty years?
20:45
Eight years. Eight years. And have you enjoyed your time here? My
20:50
time with Master Havisham has
20:52
been a joy. I feel as though since I've come here I've not only been seen as a butler but
20:57
as a friend,
20:58
a confidant. If you need me again I'll be in my quarters. Exits.
21:06
Exit. Exit.
21:11
If you'd be so kind as then in Florence Collymore on your way out.
21:15
No need, Inspector. I'm already here.
21:17
Don't ask too much of me. I feel as fragile as glass.
21:21
Don't harass her, Carter. She's been through a lot tonight.
21:24
At last, Collymore. You found me a pencil?
21:29
Yes, Inspector.
21:31
thank you and my notebook I
21:37
know I'd left them somewhere now I must speak to
21:40
Miss Collymore alone very well I'll be in the library Florence don't
21:48
fret Miss
21:48
Collymore my questions will be brief and to the point and then you can get
21:53
some
21:53
rest firstly how old are you Miss Collymore 21
22:00
I'll make note of that.
22:07
How long ago did you first meet your fiancé?
22:11
Only seven months ago, but my brother has known him for years.
22:18
When were you due to be married?
22:20
In the new year.
22:22
Well, that's enough notes for now, I think.
22:26
Miss Cornimont, did you ever...
22:28
As someone there's no such thing as rushing, Inspector.
22:31
Did you ever think you were rushing into this marriage?
22:34
Why wouldn't I love him?
22:36
Did you love him then?
22:38
How could anyone have benefited?
22:41
Can you think of anyone who may have benefited
22:44
from your fiance's death?
22:46
Cecil?
22:46
Not even Cecil.
22:49
Don't tell me to calm down.
22:51
Calm down, Miss Collymore.
22:52
I wasn't having an affair.
22:55
Don't raise your voice.
22:56
You were having an affair!
22:59
What letter?
23:00
Then how do you explain the letter
23:02
on the mantelpiece?
23:03
I didn't write that letter.
23:05
You wrote that letter?
23:07
You read my letter. Where did you find it?
23:10
Address to Cecil, written in your hand,
23:12
declaring your love for him
23:14
and how the thought of marrying Charles
23:16
repulsed you. Charles read it?
23:18
You've read my letter.
23:20
Where did you find it?
23:21
In Charles' pocket.
23:24
Charles read it, then it was suicide.
23:27
Or a murder, conceived by you and Cecil Havisham, so you could run away
23:32
together.
23:33
How dare you say that?
23:35
It's true, Cecil and I were having an affair.
23:38
We loved each other, but that's all.
23:40
Neither of us wanted to hurt Charles, let alone kill him.
23:44
It's my job to ask difficult questions, Miss Collymore.
23:48
I'm sorry if this upsets you.
23:50
Upsets me? How dare...
23:52
By you, my fiancé was murdered in this very room a matter of hours ago.
23:57
I find your matter most unbefitting.
23:59
I shall make a formal complaint to Scotland Yard.
24:03
Scotland Yard will not listen to the complaints of a murderess!
24:08
You diabolical beast! How can you?
24:10
I won't stand for this, Inspector.
24:12
Accuse me again, and you'll be so...
24:14
What's all this shouting?
24:17
What's this, Inspector?
24:19
I'm...
24:20
interviewing Miss Corleymore. Nothing more. Florence,
24:26
calm down. Stop shouting. She's
24:30
having another of her hysterical episodes. Snap out
24:35
of it. You're hysterical.
24:39
She's run off. I'll fetch her back. You stay here, Cecil. I dare say the inspector
24:44
has
24:44
some questions for you.
24:50
I'm sorry, Inspector. She's badly shaken. We all are. It's been quite a night, and
24:55
it's getting late.
24:57
Eleven o'clock already.
24:59
Well, Inspector, do you have any questions for me?
25:02
Oh, yes, Mr. Havsham. Similar questions to those I asked.
25:06
Miss Collymore.
25:07
Well, fire away, Inspector. I'm at your service.
25:10
Indeed.
25:12
You and your brother, did you get along well?
25:15
Up and down.
25:16
father died there was rather more strain in our relationship and it was no secret father cared
25:20
more for Charles than myself. This is your father in the portrait is it not? It is.
25:29
He looks just
25:30
the spit of Charles doesn't he? He did ever since he was quite young. You were the junior by
25:35
four
25:36
years? Almost four yes and didn't I know it he patronized
25:41
and embarrassed me throughout our
25:43
childhood Charles always
25:44
thought he knew best and father always took his side. Whenever he didn't get his way, he was
25:48
unbearable. He sounds far from the ideal, brother. I won't lie. It sounded like you
25:53
hated one another.
25:55
I won't lie, Inspector. Me and Charles never truly saw eye to eye, but if you're suggesting I had
25:59
something to do with his death, you're mistaken. I see. It's a dark night, Cecil.
26:12
you can barely even make out the trees
26:17
what are you saying inspector I'm saying
26:21
Cecil that tonight would be the perfect night for you to
26:26
murder your brother
26:27
inspector please me and my brother had our differences but deep down we can't
26:31
for one another and yet you had an affair with his fiancee what on earth
26:35
gave you that idea the letter I found in Charles's pocket from miss
26:40
to yourself. You know about that? As it seems. Did Charles? Well,
26:46
bravo, Inspector. Very good.
26:48
You found out about Florence and I, but it proves nothing. We didn't have a thing to do with Charles'
26:52
murder, but I can tell you who does. Who? Thomas Collymore. Collymore? But he
26:57
and Charles were
26:57
old friends. Were they not? He's a dangerously unhinged man with a devil of a temper, and
27:03
Florence
27:03
is his sister. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. He couldn't give up
27:08
his sister.
27:08
to any man, much less his old school chum. Tonight's engagement party drove him
27:13
half
27:14
mad and he snapped and killed Charles. A crime of passion, perhaps, but there it is.
27:18
Thank you, Mr Havsham. You've been most helpful. Perhaps you could fetch Thomas Corley
27:23
Moore.
27:24
I'm going to need to follow more than one line of inquiry at a time to get to the bottom
27:28
of this. At once, Inspector. Anything to help the progress of your investigation.
27:36
Hang it all, Charles! Who could have killed you?
27:41
Everyone under this blasted roof seems guilty.
27:46
That's strange. There's something under these cushions.
27:50
Allegia? Allegia!
27:56
Allegia!
28:01
Allegia?
28:05
A ledger!
28:26
You think this is funny, don't you?
28:29
I worked so hard on this play and you keep laughing because I can't find the prop.
28:33
Actors have lines written on their hands, people getting knocked unconscious.
28:38
It's just, it's terrible!
28:42
There's one more place I haven't looked.
28:44
A ledger?
28:48
A ledger!
28:52
With Charles' initials inscribed on the front.
28:56
What's inside? Notes, bills, what's this?
29:01
last will and testament of Charles Havisham dated only today. Let
29:10
me see. I,
29:12
Charles Havisham, hereby amend my last will and testament to
29:18
leave my money,
29:19
Havisham Anna, in all its contents and grounds to once. Good
29:24
Lord! Thomas Collymore
29:26
for you inspector. Ah, thank you Cecil.
29:29
tell me did charles have a study where he kept his papers of course second door on the right
29:33
i'll return presently take your time inspector indeed
29:41
did you find florence she ran out onto the grounds
30:01
Tell me, Thomas, what were your feelings about Florence and Charles' engagement?
30:06
I was overjoyed, of course.
30:07
I love Florence and I love Charles.
30:09
I couldn't have approved more of the matter.
30:11
But Collymore, it's well known that you're protective of your sister.
30:18
I'll get it!
30:31
Good evening, it's for you.
30:34
What in the devil is it?
30:36
Accountants, Collymore.
30:37
At 11.30 in the evening?
30:43
Good evening, Thomas Collymore speaking.
30:46
It is inconvenient, yes!
30:49
My recent deposits, what have them?
30:53
discrepancies? What are you talking about, man? Gone? Gone where? 9 ,000 pounds stolen?
30:59
Good God, man. Perkins, get in here! Yes, sir. Perkins,
31:05
fetch me my bank book.
31:10
Your bank book, sir. Thank you, Perkins. How could you allow this to happen? This is an
31:15
absolute disgrace. I shall report you to your superiors. Who am I speaking with? Mr.
31:21
If it's Roy, I'll write that name down.
31:29
I'll have you know that this telephone call has put me in a very difficult position.
31:35
I shall hang out the phone this instant.
31:39
What is it, Collymore?
31:41
Money stolen from my account.
31:43
Good lord.
31:44
9,000 pounds stolen from my private savings.
31:47
Most irregular.
31:48
What a ghastly...
31:49
business first my oldest friend murdered in cold blood and now I find myself
31:54
on
31:55
the edge of financial ruin this evening could get no worse Thomas
32:01
I have a
32:01
confession I wasn't going to say anything but well the inspector seems to
32:06
have found out and blast it I'm tired of keeping secrets spit it out Cecil well
32:12
Florence and I were having an affair what yes
32:17
You and my sister!
32:18
Now calm down, Collymore!
32:20
I knew it! You're always a snake in the grass!
32:22
It's not what you think! We're in love!
32:24
My sisters not love you! How dare you lay a finger on her, Habersham!
32:28
Your brother's fiancé, it's disgusting!
32:32
Don't speak about my father that way, Collymore.
32:36
Well, it seems there's no doubt about who killed Charles anymore.
32:40
He was killed by his own vile little brother in a fit of jealous rage.
32:45
I can't stand for this, Collie Moe.
32:48
You'll be sorry you ever laid a finger on my sister Havisham.
32:51
You'll be sorry.
33:10
Gunshots in the library!
33:12
By Jove!
33:13
Dear God, what's going on?
33:16
I don't know, Inspector.
33:17
I was up here when I heard screams coming from downstairs.
33:21
Get in here now, Florence. It's not safe down there.
33:26
Thomas, I'm frightened.
33:29
Don't worry, Florence. You're safe in here.
33:32
What's going on?
33:33
Isn't it obvious? Cecil has lost control.
33:37
Kessel? Surely not.
33:40
He killed Charles tonight.
33:41
Driven mad by his love for you.
33:43
And now he knows we've found him out.
33:45
I cannot bear it.
33:47
Kessel would not do such a thing.
33:50
Of course he would.
33:51
He's a blasted lunatic.
33:53
You used to trust people.
33:54
Tom, you've changed.
33:56
This is a fine mess, sir.
33:58
Worth not obviously for the 88 years of service.
34:01
Save me, brother.
34:02
Save me.
34:03
I shan't let anyone hurt a hair on your head, Florence.
34:08
I'm panicking.
34:08
I can't believe...
34:09
Kessel?
34:11
Cecil.
34:13
Cecil is doing this.
34:17
Try to relax.
34:19
I shall faint.
34:21
You shan't faint!
34:23
Confound it!
34:24
What a devil of a situation this is.
34:26
Not so fast, Inspector.
34:50
We're all going to survive tonight, you hear me?
34:56
Take cover!
34:58
Great Scott!
34:59
What happened?
35:01
Don't panic!
35:02
Cecil's crossing the landing!
35:04
We must lock him out!
35:05
Where the case is...
35:06
the door, Perkins? Here they are, sir. Here they
35:12
are, sir. Quickly, Perkins, hand them
35:14
to me. Before Cecil come, then I... Dear
35:19
Lord. Cecil's dead? A
35:25
double murder.
35:34
time of death quarter to midnight I loved
35:39

35:42

35:48

36:28

36:30
No one, Inspector.
36:32
I'm the only one with the master key.
36:34
And as instructed, I locked and bolted the doors as soon as you arrived.
36:38
Then who could have killed him?
36:40
That's a good question, Mr. Collymore.
36:43
And one we need to answer quickly if we all want to get out of this house alive.
36:48
Oh, Inspector, you've given me a chill.
36:51
Perkins, poor soul, another scotch.
36:54
Yes, Inspector.
36:56
Now tell me, is there any...
36:58
you know of still in the grounds other than the four of us? Not a
37:03
soul. The staff all go home on
37:06
the weekends except for Perkins of course. Good
37:12
god I needed that. Does anyone have access to the
37:15
grounds? No one inspector. I'm the only one with the master
37:20
key and as instructed I locked it and
37:23
I'll grab out with the dolls as soon as you're around.
37:26
then who could have killed him?
37:32
That's a good question, Mr. Collymore.
37:35
And one, we need to answer quickly
37:38
if we all want to get out of this house alive.
37:41
Oh, Inspector, you've given me a chill.
37:43
Puckins, pour us all another scotch.
37:46
As you wish, Inspector.
37:48
Now tell me, is there anyone you know of
37:51
still in the grounds other than the four of us?
37:54
The staff all go home
37:59
on the weekends, except for Perkins, of course.
38:04
Good God, I needed that.
38:06
Does anyone have access to the ground?
38:09
No one, Inspector.
38:11
I'm the only one with the master key, and as instructed, I locked and bolted the doors as soon as you
38:16
arrived.
38:17
Then who could have killed him?
38:19
That's a good question, Mr. Collymore.
38:22
That's one! We need to answer quickly if we all want to get
38:27
out of this house alive!
38:29
Oh, Inspector, you're giving me up, child!
38:32
Perkins! Pour us all another scotch!
38:35
As you wish, Inspector.
38:36
Now tell me, is there anyone you know of still in the grounds
38:42
other than the four of us?
38:44
Not a soul!
38:45
The staff all go home on the weekends, except the Perkins have come...
38:52
Good, good, I needed that.
38:54
Does anyone have access to the grounds?
38:57
No one, Inspector.
38:59
I'm the only one with the master key, and I distracted, I locked and bolted the doors as
39:04
soon as you arrived.
39:06
Then who could have killed him?
39:08
That's a good question, Mr. Collymore.
39:13
And why? We need to answer quickly if we all
39:18
want to get...
39:18
I told you this house a lie!
39:20
Oh, it's better than you're giving me a chance!
39:23
Packard!
39:24
Where is all another scotch?
39:26
As you wish, Inspector.
39:28
Now tell me, is there anyone you know of
39:32
still in the grounds
39:34
other than the four of us?
39:37
Not a fool!
39:39
The staff all
39:42
go home on the weekends
39:44
except for Packard, of course!
39:48
Good gods, I needed that!
39:50
Does anyone have access to the ground?
39:54
No one, Inspector!
39:58
I'm the only one with the master key,
40:00
and as instructed I locked and bolted the doors
40:03
as soon as you arrived.
40:06
Then who could have killed him?
40:12
No one could have killed him except for the people...
40:16
You're right! It's one of us!
40:20
Blast him, blimey!
40:22
One of you killed Charles and Cecil have a sham tonight,
40:24
and we shan't leave the house until the matter is solved.
40:27
You, take this body outside.
40:29
I'll lend you hand-packings.
41:01
So, let's go over the fox.
41:06
Florence, you were engaged to be married to Charles, a man who, according to your
41:11
Coletta? You despised. Not only this, but you were having an affair with your
41:16
brother, Cecil.
41:17
Cecil? It seems plausible to me that you both murdered him so you could be together.
41:23
Oh, stop it, Inspector. Cecil's there too now, and I certainly didn't kill Charlie.
41:30
What's going on?
41:31
You killed him!
41:35
She's having another hysterical episode.
41:41
Florence! Behave for some decorum! Remember yourself!
41:48
Someone ought to fetch her medication.
41:51
I'll go. Good God! Someone's locked the door! We're trapped!
41:57
Trapped! My God!
41:59
You killed your fiancé! Florence! What do you have to say for yourself?
42:07
I'm an honorable woman, Inspector!
42:11
You're lying, Florence! You killed him!
42:14
How dare you make such an accusation, Inspector!
42:18
You're all beast!
42:20
Did you...
42:20
Calm down, Florence, really!
42:22
Did you enjoy killing your husband, Miss Collymore?
42:25
How dare you say that, Inspector!
42:28
I won't stand another second in this room
42:31
if I can't get out the door!
42:35
I shall descend from the window.
42:38
My God, she's trying to climb out the window.
42:42
Don't climb out the window.
42:44
Florence, you'll hurt yourself.
42:48
This is the second story.
42:50
You're going to break all your bones.
42:52
We can't afford another lawsuit.
42:54
I said no.
42:56
I am no murderer.
42:59
Calm yourself, Miss Collymore.
43:01
You and Cecil both have plausible...
43:03
motives for murder, but not the true motive. What are you saying, Inspector? I'm
43:08
saying
43:09
the true motive belongs to Perkins. Perkins? Me, Inspector. You,
43:14
Perkins, a letter earlier
43:16
I stumbled across Charles' newly written last will and testament, dated only today, declaring
43:22
that Perkins was the sole beneficiary of Charles' inheritance. Surely
43:27
not Perkins.
43:31
It's all a misunderstanding.
43:32
I haven't killed anyone.
43:34
Save your pleading for the police station.
43:37
Cuff him, Thomas.
43:42
I'll drive you there myself
43:43
as soon as the snowstorm has passed.
43:46
That won't be for hours.
43:48
The snow's at its peak.
43:50
It's not true, I tell you.
43:52
Surely Perkins didn't kill Cecil as well.
43:56
Course he did.
43:57
Cecil found him out and Perkins-
43:59
killed him to keep him quiet I've been killed anyone this is all
44:04
misunderstanding but I know who has you
44:09
know who killed Charles I do the
44:16
inspector dead you did it and I know why shut
44:21
your mouth up in Perkins you did
44:23
it because Charles knew about the police money you were imbezalance
44:27
Hence, you mentioned you had several rendezvous with
44:32
Charles at the local police station before.
44:35
You said that he was a consultant on the fraud case you were working on.
44:38
What of it?
44:39
Charles came home that night very intrigued by the matter.
44:43
He decided to look into the case more personally,
44:45
and he found out why no arrests had been made was because the man committing the fraud was
44:50
himself.
44:51
You were the unbeasled.
44:52
You were the pur-pur-potato.
44:54
You were the pur-pur-
44:55
potato. You can't prove it. But Charles could and that's why you killed him. Never. I
45:01
know
45:01
your secret inspector. What you gonna do? Kill me too? I will. Confound
45:07
it. What a devil
45:09
of a situation this is. Ha ha. Not so fast inspector.
45:18
Charles? Mr. Havsham? Charlie I thought you were dead.
45:23
You're alive? It's not possible.
45:26
Oh, but I'm afraid it is.
45:28
You couldn't kill me that easily.
45:33
How did you survive?
45:35
I simply did not drink the poisoned water that you left out for me this afternoon.
45:40
How did you know it was me?
45:42
I told Perkins, we've been working together all along,
45:45
ever since we last spoke at the police station.
45:48
It was clear you thought I was on to you.
45:50
It was at this point that I became a...
45:51
afraid that you would try to kill me. For months now I've had my guard up, and tonight
45:56
you fell into my trap. You've been hiding in the grounds ever since this afternoon
46:01
when you planted the poison. I thought it was strange you got here so quickly in such
46:05
terrible weather. And that's when you found Charles's will in the ledger and tried to
46:10
pin the whole thing on me. You darn crafty devil. Crafty indeed. Perkins
46:16
here is as
46:17
innocent as I am. Uncuff him this instance.
46:30
Stop the gun, Inspector!
46:32
Aye, me!
46:34
I came here to kill you, Charles, and I won't leave until the job's done.
46:39
It's over, Inspector.
46:41
I could prove your guilt in a second.
46:43
I have the evidence in my study.
46:45
Fetch the papers, Perkins.
46:46
Yes, sir.
47:00
lower your weapon inspector it's over please inspector you're frightening
47:05
me you are to be
47:07
frightened you monster you tried to kill you monster you tried to kill charles and
47:12
you killed
47:12
cecil how could you i'll admit i
47:16
I tried to kill Charles, but I never went anywhere near Cecil.
47:19
In fact, when I discovered you and he were having an affair,
47:23
I was overjoyed.
47:25
I had the perfect man to pin it on.
47:27
Until my accomplice blundered in.
47:30
It's true, and your accomplice, I regret to say,
47:34
has been my friend ever since we were at school.
47:36
Isn't that right, Thomas Collymore?
47:40
It's true, I'm the inspector's accomplice.
47:42
I helped to move the money.
47:44
Brother, I'm surprised at you.
47:47
I don't know what you've become.
47:49
I'm so ashamed.
47:50
I met Inspector Carter here a few months ago down in my club.
47:54
We found between us we could move the money from the police's sundry fund accounts easily.
47:59
Carter had the access, and I had the facility to move the money fast and keep it secure.
48:03
Or so I thought until tonight.
48:08
Line!
48:09
I have no place, you're right.
48:12
I don't know what page we're on, mate.
48:17
As for Cecil.
48:20
As for Cecil?
48:21
That was more crime of passion, simple as that.
48:23
Cecil, but I loved him.
48:25
He was my...
48:26
Cecil, but I loved him.
48:27
He was my only.
48:28
Oh, thank you, Perkins.
48:29
Now fetch my pipe from the study.
48:35
I now hold in my hand a written list of every fraudulent...
48:40
transaction Thomas Carlymore and Inspector Carter made.
48:44
It can't be true, I won't believe-
48:47
This can't be true, I won't believe it, I can't believe it.
48:50
But it is true. When I found out she was interfering with you, Florence, my own
48:55
sister, well, it's more than I could bear.
48:58
Your sordid affair sickened me, Florence. You broke my heart.
49:03
Charlie, you mustn't. I made a mistake. Take me back, I'll be yours all over.
49:08
Take back a woman who has betrayed me? Never!
49:12
Charlie! You're all I have! Let me all play so much!
49:16
Thank you, Perkins. God knows I could use a smoke.
49:19
Let me be away!
49:20
That's fetched at all, Perkins.
49:22
That would be the police to arrest you both.
49:24
I can not bat another second. Look at me!
49:28
Silence, Lawrence. You are nothing to me now.
49:30
This is the worst night of my life!
49:32
No! No!
49:36
It's the worst of my life!
49:38
No, it is the worst of mine.
49:42
But Thomas, Carter had you fooled, didn't he?
49:45
What do you mean?
49:46
He never intended to share the money with you.
49:48
Let me summarize.
49:49
I love you, Charlie!
49:53
The inspector knew I had found you and he were both
49:55

49:57
So you hatched a plan to-
49:59
Don't hold up the ring, Charlie!
50:00
I can make it work!
50:01
Plan to kill me!
50:03
Plan!
50:04
plant to kill me, planting poisoned water for me to drink.
50:07
Then mistakenly believing I was dead, Carter tried to pin my murder on Cecil and Florence
50:12
because of their affair, until your accomplice Thomas
50:17
blundered in and shot my brother Cecil.
50:21
To which you responded to blame Perkins on matter.
50:28
Perkins? But except what you didn't know, Thomas.
50:33
was that the inspector made a £9 ,000 withdrawal from your private
50:38
accounts this morning
50:39
and after framing somebody for my murder, planned to flee, taking every penny.
50:45
I think it's time to open your attache case, inspector.
50:55
The £9,000!
50:58
He allowed you to take all the risk by storing the store.
51:00
money in your private accounts isn't that right isn't
51:06
that right inspector all right it's true
51:10
i forged your signature at the bank and took out every penny i
51:15
hadn't bargained on your
51:17
accountants catching on this quickly and telephoning you so soon you rogue
51:22
i trusted
51:22
you you made a mistake that card i'm afraid it's your last
51:32
Ping!
51:33
Ah, my fingers!
51:35
The officers are waiting in the hall, sir.
51:44
Ah!
51:47
Oh, my God!
52:08
The officers are waiting in the hall, sir.
52:15
Excellent.
52:17
Escort my fiancé downstairs.
52:20
I wish to have a word with Thomas in private.
52:23
Yes, sir.
52:28
Thomas, you're not the man I once knew from Eton.
52:32
You've become greedy and jealous.
52:34
I'm sorry, Charles.
52:35
I feel as though I'm about to pass out.
52:37
There's a glass of water by the telephone.
52:39
Thank you, Charles.
52:40
Ever the kindest host.
52:41
Drink it up.
52:42
Most kind.
52:43
Tell me, Thomas, one thing.
52:46
Anything, Charles.
52:47
I shall tell no more lies.
52:49
The glass of poisoned water the inspector left out for me.
52:52
What do you suppose...
52:52
as I did with it.
52:53
Well, I didn't.
52:56
What do you mean?
52:58
You mean you gave me the, Charlie, Charlie, no, no, no.
53:04
Oh, how I wish this could have ended differently.
53:08
Thomas, your lies and deceits
53:10
have led you inexorably to this end.
53:13
If men allow their conscience to be governed by avarice,
53:17
then death and destruction shall prevail.
53:20
Betrayed by my brother.
53:33
Betrayed by my fiancee.
53:36
And almost murdered by my oldest friend.
53:41
Let us hope we never again see a murder
53:47
at Havisham Manor.
54:10
We'll be right back.
54:17
Thank you.
