And lastly, 13:40 I would like 13:41 to honor and recognize the teaching and support staff from our feeder schools 13:45 and the district office of Menlo Park City School District. If you work in any 13:49 capacity at Heritage Oaks, the Early Learning Center, and 13:54 Laurel, Ensignal, 13:55 Oak Knoll, or the district office, please stand and be recognized. You are just as 14:00 much a part of the graduate's journey. 14:02 anyone. All 14:13 right, so before I turn the microphone over to our first student 14:18 speakers, I want to take the opportunity to address the graduates. All 14:23 right, and 14:28 parents have been following 14:30 my parents' swear post, it feels like I've written a couple of graduation speeches already 14:34 this week. But I have prepared some special and personal remarks for 14:40 these amazing eighth graders. 14:43 All right, class of 2022, I was searching for a topic I 14:49 could dedicate to you, 14:50 and in a moment of inspiration, the word crucible came to mind. The 14:56 word has a dual meaning. 14:58 one hand, a crucible is a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances 15:04 may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. On the other hand, a 15:09 crucible 15:09 has a metaphoric meaning of a situation of severe trial, or 15:15 in which different elements interact 15:17 leading to the creation of something new. How does that relate to you, 15:22 class of 2022? 15:24 I thought about how you came to 15:26 you as sixth graders excited and yes clueless expecting some 15:32 kind of new normal and how you 15:34 were quickly exposed to the powerful forces of the pandemic i thought about how 15:39 you weathered 15:40 what was at times unbearable pressure and the searing fear that a precious piece 15:46 of your 15:46 childhood would be lost forever i thought of you i 15:53 thought i thought of you 15:55 as innocence lost and confidence gained. I thought of 16:00 you as the raw material that time 16:03 and circumstance forged into something new and beautiful. I 16:09 thought of how you persevered 16:10 in the face of the unknown and how that trial, through some special alchemy, 16:16 transformed you into a version of yourself that you could not have imagined. Class 16:21 of 2022, 16:23 The pandemic has been and continues to be your crucible. 16:27 I could not be more proud of the way you have shown resilience 16:31 and how ready you are for the next step in your academic careers. 16:36 Like a diamond created by immense pressure and temperature, 16:40 you have become more brilliant and nearly indestructible as a result of adversity. 16:47 I need look no further than the way you have come together and taken action. 16:51 social justice. Here I want to appreciate the leaders of some of our affinity groups 16:56 and lunchtime clubs, Eva Averbuck and Layla Gallen for their work in the Black 17:01 Union, 17:04 Jocelyn Damien and Layla Avalos -Lopez for 17:10 their advocacy on the Latinx Student Union, 17:13 and Auden Jones, Jackson Loftus, and B. Stone for enlightening our campus through 17:18 their 17:19 and the Gay-Straight Alliance. 17:22 Thank you and all the members of your teams 17:25 for taking up the cause for more inclusivity, 17:28 tolerance, and education. 17:31 Class of 2022, you are well prepared because guess what? 17:36 Life is a crucible. 17:38 This is not the first trial you will face, 17:41 and this is not the first time that you will be reshaped 17:43 and made stronger by challenges. 17:46 It may be... 17:47 the complex crucible of our society's moral crises, where in the past three 17:52 years we have 17:52 seen a groundswell of reactions in response to economic oppression, as well as political 17:58 polarization that resulted in attack on our nation's capital. Or you could 18:03 face your own 18:03 personal test, the crucible of battling mental health or struggling to establish equality. 18:09 In either case, that struggle will be productive. You 18:14 will adapt. 18:15 hone your skills. Hawks, all of us have faced the 18:20 unimaginable in the past three years and yet 18:23 here we are. Stronger, smarter, more 18:28 ready than ever. I have been proud to grow and change with 18:32 you in the crucible of the pandemic and look forward to the next steps in my own journey 18:37 as I graduate Hillview with you. Class of 2022, never 18:42 forget how 18:43 triumphed over obstacles and how this place hillview middle school both helped 18:48 mold you 18:49 and benefited from your gifts i wish you all the best and as for your future we 18:55 say here 18:56 you got this thank you class of 2022. 19:08 all right so enough with that 19:11 the adult talk. 19:12 I'm excited to welcome to the podium graduating 8th graders 19:17 Leila Avalos Lopez and Jocelyn Damian for their joint 19:22 for their joint graduation address. 19:28 He wanted it. 19:36 I'm going to do it right here. 19:40 Okay, okay, resilience, 19:57 resilience is when we take on challenges, bounce back when things 20:01 get difficult, overcome self doubt, and see things through. 20:07 Will Smith once said, failure is a massive part of being able to be successful. 20:13 You have to get comfortable with failure. 20:15 You have to actually seek failure. 20:17 Failure is what all of the lessons are. 20:19 Hi, it's Jocelyn Damien and Leila Avalos. 20:22 We finally finished middle school. 20:25 It all started August 2019 once we came to Hillview. 20:29 It was at the end of sixth grade when COVID hit. 20:32 They said we'd be able to come back to school after two weeks. 20:35 We never came back. 20:36 We had to quarantine for the rest of sixth and seventh grade. 20:41 We never got the chance to really live out 20:43 our middle school years. 20:45 School started getting harder for us, 20:47 and it was hard to figure out how to use Zoom in Schoology. 20:50 Later on, it was summer. 20:53 Then summer had ended, and it was the beginning of seventh grade. 20:56 We would still struggle in school 20:58 and didn't think we can make it throughout the year. 21:00 We never tried in school and never joined our Zooms. 21:03 soon later in seventh grade we started doing one week online and one week in school 21:08 shout out to 21:09 mr green and mr rogers for always trying to communicate with me and giving me various 21:14 of chances and never letting me down when we heard we were coming back to school 21:19 full time 21:20 we were excited and nervous starting eighth grade without doing school for 21:25 the last year 21:26 we didn't know what to expect as soon as we started we knew we could do this 21:31 we 21:31 could graduate. 21:33 This year was life-changing for all of us, 21:36 but I started participating in class 21:38 and making relationships with staff who cared about me. 21:42 Shout out to Miss D.A. and Miss Staff for believing in me. 21:47 I would have not made it this year without Miss Wynn. 21:50 Who would have thought history could have been so interesting? 21:54 Thank you, Miss Wynn. 21:57 This year, what really impacted us 22:00 was the belief that Ms. Keith, Ms. Martinez, Ms. Donahoe, 22:03 and Ms. V had in us. 22:05 They saw us, heard us, and believed in us. 22:07 They believed and always reminded us we could do it. 22:10 We could graduate. 22:11 Somos dos latinas poderosas listas para cambiar el mundo. 22:28 All right, thank you, Layla and Jocelyn. 22:30 At this time, we're going to take a moment 22:32 to recognize the first round of students 22:35 who received recognition at our recent 22:36 eighth grade awards assembly for outstanding performance, 22:40 attitude, and achievement in specific content areas. 22:44 Joining me to recognize these students 22:46 is our Associate Principal and incoming Interim Principal, 22:50 Mrs. Danielle O'Brien. 22:54 Thank you, Mr. Howe. 22:56 It is my pleasure to begin by introducing the winners of the departmental 23:01 awards this year from English, Math, Social Studies, and Science, as 23:07 well as students who earned Fluent England Proficient Reclassification. 23:11 Graduates, when I call your name, please stand to be recognized. That's why Auden Jones, Emma 26:45 Mulcahy, B. Stone, and myself decided to create 26:49 the GSA. The GSA creates a 26:55 safe space for people in the LGBTQIA community, and it also 27:01 allows students to learn more about their classmates. We came together weekly 27:06 to discuss 27:07 current topics in an issue. 27:08 affecting the LGBTQI community. We hosted craft fairs 27:14 and bake sales to raise money 27:15 for the LGBTQI community and educated Hillview 27:21 students about LGBTQI topics on 27:24 HawkTalk like gender and the Don't Say Gay Bill. Finally we decorated in 27:29 a 27:29 celebration of Pride Month in June. We were also instrumental in working with 27:34 Mr. Hawk to add gender-neutral change 27:36 rooms for gym class. One of my favorite things we did this year was 27:42 a coming out story day 27:43 when we created an open space where people could come and tell their coming out stories 27:48 if they felt comfortable. This was so wonderful and powerful. Seven of our classmates 27:53 stood 27:54 up and talked about their experiences in front of 25 to 30 people and 27:59 didn't have to feel 28:00 like they've harassed or bullied. With the help of Ms. Anne, 28:04 our awesome GSA mentor and 28:10 the eighth grade science teachers, 28:12 one of the GSA co-founders, Auden Jones, and I rewrote some 28:17 of the outdated sex ed curriculum for gender and sexuality. 28:21 This allowed us to explain a complex topic so everyone 28:25 would be able to learn and understand the important issues 28:29 around gender and sexuality for LGBTQI. 28:33 youth. I had many people come up to me and tell me they really understood 28:38 the 28:38 topic a lot more than they had before. In our country today there 28:43 are many new 28:44 threats to the LGBTQIA youth. They don't say gay bill has 28:49 limits the help and 28:50 support that student can get at school, bans of LGBTQIA 28:56 books make them feel 28:57 like they are not normal. And if Roe v. Wade... 29:01 overturned, it could lead to the rights of the LGBTQIA community also 29:06 be taken away. All of 29:08 these things may put LGBTQIA youth at risk because they are scared to be 29:13 themselves, they could be 29:15 outed to their parents, or even worse, may find themselves in an unsafe situation. 29:20 I'm so proud 29:21 to be a graduate of a place like Hillview where we focus on supporting and understanding each 29:26 other and celebrating rather than 29:29 our differences. I do have one thing to say to the students of Hillview before I 29:34 go. Remember to educate yourselves and be inclusive. Just this week we 29:39 saw how 29:39 real this challenge is for all of us. Making our community better can be as 29:44 simple as leaving a hateful social media group or as brave as speaking up when 29:49 you see a hateful speech. I will be moving to a whole new state and community. In 36:08 sixth grade, I moved here 36:10 from Texas, leaving behind everything that was dear to me. In 36:15 the years since sixth grade, 36:17 Hillview has become my home. Even more, my teachers and friends have become my 36:22 family. 36:23 A lot of my own family could not be here today to watch me graduate and 36:29 step forward into the 36:30 next chapter in my life. My mother always said that she would 36:35 be here for me even if she couldn't. 36:38 I didn't know what she meant until now. When I feel down or 36:43 sad, I think of my mother and what 36:46 she would say to encourage me. Right now, I know she would be my biggest fan 36:52 and I know she would 36:54 be so proud of my accomplishments and would be cheering me on. 36:58 from out there i really wish she could be here to see how 37:03 far i've come but i know that my mother's 37:07 smiling wherever she is these three years of middle school 37:12 have been something else 37:14 we were literally in school when the global pandemic begun then 37:20 we abruptly left school 37:22 in march of sixth grade stayed mostly away in seventh grade 37:26 and return fully as eighth graders. 37:30 And we're stronger because of it. 37:32 And I believe the class of 2022 37:35 is one of the strongest graduating classes ever. 37:39 I want everyone to give themselves a big pat on the back 37:42 right now to take a moment to appreciate 37:46 and marvel at your success. 37:49 I can never thank the Hillview teachers and staff 37:53 enough for help. 37:54 us and pulling us through distance learning, hybrid learning, mask wearing and 37:59 all the challenges in between. You made sure that no one was left behind. In 38:05 all 38:05 my life I've never had this much support and I've never met such talented 38:11 and 38:11 wonderful people. My teachers and friends have been here for me 38:16 since day 38:17 one and you know who you are. This 44:37 designation is earned by students who have maintained a high level of 44:41 achievement throughout their middle school years. In order to be eligible, not 44:46 only must students have a cumulative grade point average of 3 .5 or equivalent 44:52 levels of mastery in classes that use a standard 44:55 based reporting system they must also maintain this level of achievement 45:00 in 45:01 each and every grading period of their middle school years all the way up to 45:05 trimester two of eighth grade that means that each student receiving 45:11 this 45:11 recognition has consistently met high standards of academic performance for 45:15 eight consecutive trimesters or for every trimester they have attended 45:21 Hillview they did so through the most 45:23 challenging period of learning in their lifetimes continuing to show up and 45:27 engage even during distance learning. This required resilience in addition to 45:32 commitment to excellence. Congratulations. 49:47 Presidential Awards for Academic Achievement students, please be seated. 49:55 All right, now honored guest, next up please welcome 50:00 to the podium graduating 50:02 8th grader Lucy Long. 50:05 for her graduation address. 50:11 Yeah, Lucy! 50:17 Mr. Huffman, have a mic. 50:18 Yeah, we have the mic. 50:19 Thank you. 50:43 good afternoon class of 2022 my name is lucy lent one 50:48 thing that has defined us is the challenges 50:51 we have faced as a society and as a school these past three years the 50:56 pandemic was disabling for 50:58 all of us as you can see 51:00 I am disabled and I have to deal with a disorder known as SMA, which 51:06 is an acronym for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. 51:09 This disease prevents mobility in all four of my limbs, which makes it difficult 51:14 to accomplish schoolwork independently, move from class to class, and communicate with 51:20 other students. 51:22 We all had to grapple with distance learning, which isolated us from one of the most 51:27 important social times. 51:28 of our lives. The isolation of the pandemic made it difficult to accomplish 51:33 school work 51:34 independently, and we all missed our interactions with each other. The 51:40 pandemic has affected this 51:41 class more than any past generation at Hillview. Since we had to do online 51:46 learning, it was very 51:47 difficult to acquire the education that we would have had available to us in a 51:53 face -to -face 51:53 environment. With online learning, 51:56 we didn't have access to the resources we would normally have in person in 52:02 a school setting. 52:03 These past three years have been a crazy experience for me and probably for all of you. 52:09 Even though it was a difficult experience, we all never gave up. 52:13 We persevere through everything in middle school, and we can persevere through high school too. 52:19 I'm hoping you are all looking forward to the next chapter of our academic careers. 52:25 quarantine was a unique experience for each of us we had to learn how to socialize in a 52:30 different 52:31 setting since quarantine was happening this year in science class we learned 52:36 about the prefrontal 52:37 cortex and how it affects adolescent brains these pre -teenage years are very 52:42 important in our brain 52:43 development stages quote many suggest that embracing and maintaining the 52:48 traits that 52:49 emerge during adolescence can make us more productive 52:52 successful, content, and happy adults, end quote. 52:56 This passage shows that when we face a pandemic, 53:00 we had to adapt and to be creative. 53:02 Even though our generation was emotionally impacted, 53:06 we persevered and figured out how to socialize while quarantined. 53:10 I remember playing video games with friends online 53:14 and being together, even virtually, 53:16 made me less anxious about everything going on. 53:20 Just like how it happened, 53:21 we never gave up in these trying times, we have learned to be creative and put our best 53:26 foot 53:26 forward and we can continue to do that in high school. We 53:31 have overcome many challenges in this 53:33 global pandemic including how to reintegrate back to school after distance learning. A 53:39 fond memory 53:39 I had at Hillview with a fellow student was in science class. This classmate helped 53:44 me take 53:45 notes when I was stuck on a question. By doing so I 53:49 was able to complete my assignment on time. This is evidence that there is no such thing 53:54 as a small 53:55 kind act. It might seem like when you do a nice thing that it won't affect the 54:00 person you are 54:01 helping, but it can make their day. At Hillview, I have witnessed so many acts 54:06 of service and I have 54:07 learned that hawks never give up. I hope we can all carry this determination into 54:12 high school. 54:13 I could not have done it without the support of the teachers 54:17 and all the staff of the Menlo Park City School District. 54:20 To all my peers who have been very supportive 54:23 and continue to support me and each other, 54:25 I want to say thank you so much 54:27 for all the social and academic assistance. 54:30 There is no such thing as a small act of kindness. 54:33 I just want to say thank you to you all 54:36 and never give up. 54:38 Thank you. 55:08 All right, thank you, Lucy. 55:12 It is my pleasure to... 55:13 introduce a few more students who received additional recognition. In past years we presented what was called the faculty award 56:20 to students. 56:21 Given our recent development of the five core skills we decided to rebrand this 56:26 award to highlight those traits and competencies we value so highly. If 56:31 you 56:31 don't know he'll use five core skills. They are curiosity, compassion, critical 56:37 thinking, ownership, and resilience, and they represent critical skills that 56:42 we work to 56:43 develop in students to ensure their success in an increasingly complex future. 56:48 Our process for selecting the five core skill students started with our entire staff. 56:53 We asked all non-academy teachers to first identify students who embodied each of these 56:58 Then, academy teachers reviewed those names. 57:01 It makes sense that academy teachers who have students for four periods of time 57:05 a day have keen insight into their qualities, but they also need the big picture of how 57:10 students 57:10 present in physical education, world language, and electives. Academy teachers 57:15 from Explorers, 57:16 Pioneers, and Trailblazers, along with Ames Academy, combine the input 57:22 of their larger staff 57:23 and their own personal experience with students to come up with their honorees. This is such an honor for me to be here again to help present the 58:51 Jeff 58:52 Sorrell Scholarship Award. As Mr. Haug said, I was 58:57 a teacher and 58:57 here for 35 years. And in the mid -1980s, 59:03 I had a student, Jeff Sorrells, who was in both my fifth 59:07 and sixth grade class. Yes, we had fifth graders here back then. During 59:14 those years, Jeff was a 59:15 spunky, fun -loving, quirky kid, and a joy to have in class. 59:21 The summer before his seventh grade year, 59:24 he was diagnosed 59:25 with cancer. And we lost Jeff shortly after Christmas that year. 59:31 The following June, the 59:34 Sorrells family graciously set up a scholarship award in his honor. 59:39 And for 35 years, they have 59:43 awarded one eighth grader what is now a $3 ,000 scholarship 59:49 to be presented upon 59:54 graduation from high school. 59:57 Dr. and Mrs. Sorrells couldn't be here this evening, 1:00:00 but their son, Kevin, is. 1:00:04 I'd like to ask Kevin to please stand 1:00:08 and accept our deepest gratitude 1:00:10 for the incredible gift your family has given 1:00:14 to the Hillview community over all these years. 1:00:20 The selection and 1:00:22 The announcement of this award has always been a highlight for our staff. 1:00:28 Thank you, and please give our best to your parents. 1:00:32 I'd also like to thank the Hillview staff, past and present, 1:00:37 who each June brainstormed the names of a plethora of 1:00:42 students, 1:00:42 and this year was no exception, and worked to narrow the field. 1:00:48 It has never been... 1:00:50 easy, but it has always been a labor of love. The giving of this award has blessed us 1:01:11 more than words can express. 1:01:13 We knew that we didn't want to recognize only academic achievement or 1:01:18 easily measurable qualities, but rather what today is considered character. 1:01:24 Someone said 1:01:25 these are the fruits of the spirit. Peace, patience, kindness, 1:01:32 gentleness, self -control, 1:01:34 and the giving of oneself without any expectation of an external 1:01:39 reward. The gift of perseverance 1:01:42 and a zest and joy for living. 1:01:47 Our 2018 winner, Eric Erickson, is not able to 1:01:52 be here this evening, but they 1:01:54 have sent some words that Mr. Haug will read. 1:02:04 All right, there's a lot of great voice in here, so I'm going to do the best that 1:02:07 I can. These are the words of Eric Erickson, 2018 Soros Award winner. 1:02:13 You would think. 1:02:14 being in a different country would be far enough away that I wouldn't be nervous about this speech. 1:02:19 Yet somehow, I can still feel the stares of these tweens drilling into 1:02:24 the back of my head, 1:02:26 waiting for me to get to the point. Not too long ago, that was me sitting on these bleachers, 1:02:32 waiting for the moment I could finally shed the awkward in-between of adolescence 1:02:36 and claim myself as the official high schooler adult that I was. I remember the 1:02:41 exact moment. 1:02:42 I won this award because it was the first time in my life that I questioned if a 13 -year 1:02:47 -old could have a stroke out of excitement. 1:02:50 On a serious note, however, this award has gotten me through some really rough times. 1:02:55 I know now that this achievement was given to me not because I was lucky, I was a 1:03:00 lucky number, but because I had earned it. 1:03:03 And for the year of 2022, the class of 2022, you have now earned 1:03:08 it and you deserve it. 1:03:10 Back to the more important subject, me, Eric Erickson. 1:03:14 It has come full circle, and I am graduating once again, 1:03:17 but now with a commitment to the University of Oregon for Liberal Arts and Sciences, 1:03:22 though I still carry that awkward sense of in-between. 1:03:25 And now it's mixed with a pinch of existential dread and the ability to file tax returns. 1:03:32 Finally, I reach the end, so if I can have your dwindling attention for just one more minute, 1:03:36 I will bestow upon you the best. 1:03:38 best advice you will ever receive. You incoming freshmen have 1:03:44 what the rest of us want. You will 1:03:46 have resources, you will have opportunities, and you will have time. Three 1:03:52 things. You do not have 1:03:53 to know everything, and if you do, then for the love of God, pretend you don't. So 1:03:59 use your 1:03:59 resources. It is okay to change your path, and it is even more okay 1:04:04 to not even know there was a path. 1:04:06 the first place. So take advantage of the opportunities given to you, not for the 1:04:11 sake of your transcript, but for the sake of experience. Three, 1:04:16 your high school is 1:04:17 about finding yourself and yada yada, but that doesn't mean that you need to 1:04:22 develop into this person by tomorrow.
